Rock Chalk Joyhawk!

March Madness

This is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s college basketball playoff time! If you are a K State or Tiger fan, you may hate this time of year. Sorry. As a Jayhawk fan, I can’t get enough.

Last night, I listened to a little bit of the coverage of KU being chosen as a #1 seed in the national tournament. Bill Self, KU’s coach, said this about the Jayhawk team,

“Right now they’re playing joyful. I have to remind them of that some times…play joyful.”

That’s a powerful statement. Play joyful.

Joyfully Generous.

Pastor David yesterday shared the second message in our March Kindness series. He gave this definition of kindness –

the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate in an effort to meet the need of others.

Let me key in on that word “generous”

6Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

8And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. 9As the Scriptures say,
“They share freely and give generously to the poor.
Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”

10For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.

11Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God. 12So two good things will result from this ministry of giving—the needs of the believers in Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully express their thanks to God. -2 Corinthians 9:6-12

One of the things God asks us to do…no be, is generous. The ESV translates verse 7 as “for God loves a cheerful giver.” Which brings me back to March Madness and the KU Jayhawks.

The things we do in life should be full of joy – especially the things God asks us to do. It’s why God loves a cheerful giver. It’s why Bill Self loves a team playing joyful basketball.

This week your challenge is to give something away. Some of you may have an item, a person or a cause in mind. If not, let me offer a suggestion.

I have a friend who is in need. He’s not a believer, but he’s asking questions. His son is in the midst of an illness that doctors have no answers for. No answers in the sense they don’t really know what the problem is.

Because of this, they are traveling to a special hospital to meet with special doctors. As you can imagine, this won’t be cheap, so they are raising funds. My friend is a fine art photographer, so he’s selling one of his prints toward this cause.

If you can, be generous. It’s not inexpensive ($99 + S/H), but it’s an investment. It’s generosity. I just purchased my print. I want to support him and his family. I want to be kind.

Find theimagejournal.com HERE.

I would love for you to put on kindness too. It doesn’t have to be with Ryan. It could be someone else – something else. Not matter what it is…be joyfully generous.

What exactly is a whitewashed wall? by Pastor Andy

You Whitewashed Wall!

A little backstory. Paul has returned to Jerusalem much to the chagrin of those around him. Just as they prophesied, Paul is arrested and put on trial. Eventually, Paul appeals and travels to Rome, but first he appears before the Sanhedrin and the High Priest.

The Sanhedrin was a Jewish court of law (it was established centuries before by Moses). There were actually Sanhedrin’s all over Israel, but this Sanhedrin was like the Supreme court. The High Priest presided over the Sanhedrin.

This is where Paul finds himself in Acts 23 –

1And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.” 2And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?” 4Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God’s high priest?”  -Acts 23:1-4

Paul was fired up. He went right after that ole whitewashed wall, Ananias…the High Priest himself. There seems to be some debate on why Paul spoke like he did. Some theories:

  1. Paul had an eye condition and couldn’t see who he was talking to.
  2. Ananias was a temporary fill-in, and Paul was unaware.
  3. Paul has lost his mind, so to speak, and loses track to who he is speaking to.

We also know according to the ancient Jewish historian, Josephus, that Ananias was known as corrupt and lawless in his position. He held his office with nothing more in mind than himself.

While it would seem we don’t know Paul’s reason for his rash statement to Ananias, he is justified in saying it. Right?

Not exactly. Look at the very next line of the text –

And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”  -Romans 23:5

Paul apologizes.

Honoring Spiritual Leaders

This week, we are focusing on honor – God, parents, others, spiritual leaders and authority. Pastor David preached Sunday on the topic, and each day for our devotions, we are focusing on one of those sub-topics.

Today, it’s honoring our spiritual leaders.

What Paul does in Acts 23 is amazing. In mid-tirade, he stops. In the midst of dressing down a man, he slams on the brakes. Why?

Paul recognizes not the man, but the position the man holds. Whether Paul agrees with him or not, the High Priest is a place of honor. God honored that position – even if the culture didn’t.

Thankfully, the pastors, GROW group leaders and other teachers at Cross Points are not corrupt, lawless and selfish in their dealings with you and me. It makes it easier to show them honor, but there will be opportunity for disagreement.

What will you do at that moment?

The same Paul who apologized above, wrote this to the Roman Christians –

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.  -Romans 13:1

This was written in reference to political and civic leaders, but the principle remains the same. God has placed spiritual leaders over you, will you honor them?

Today, take stock of your life. Who are the men or women in places of leadership over you spiritually? Are you showing them honor? How can you better honor these men or women?

Two Better than One – Pastor Andy Bondurant

Quirky Quirkiness

Yesterday, Pastor Matt wrote about growing together…better. He used the example of a roommate or spouse’s quirky habits – leaving the toilet seat up, throwing clothes on the ground, chomping ice or other inconsequential by annoying tics.

In our daily staff devotions, we discussed the habits that drive our spouses or significant others crazy. Along with the examples above, we shared these:

  • walking/ambling without purpose
  • excessive hand washing
  • putting a glass still being used in the dishwasher
  • walking in the house with work boots/shoes
  • start eating a meal when the rest of the family hasn’t arrived (so it will be hot)

These are just a few of the annoying habits we have as a staff!

As we discussed our quirks, two scriptures came to my mind.

Sharpened by Quirks

Proverbs 27:17 (MSG)
You use steel to sharpen steel,
and one friend sharpens another.

We need each other. We need each other to rub our rough spots off. We make each other sharper. Many of us in the room have been married 15, 20, 25 years, and we still do the same things!

I need to accept my wife’s quirks (much fewer than my own!). Why? Her quirks rub off my rough edges. It makes me sharper. It teaches me to love and accept her and others unconditionally.

A small group of believers meeting together does the same thing. We don’t all see the same things the same way, so when we mix, we knock off the rough edges of our beliefs, thoughts and actions.

Annoyingly Strong

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (MSG)
9-10It’s better to have a partner than go it alone.
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls down, the other helps,
But if there’s no one to help, tough!
11Two in a bed warm each other.
Alone, you shiver all night.
12By yourself you’re unprotected.
With a friend you can face the worst.
Can you round up a third?
A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.

If you learn to put my quirky, odd habits aside (and me yours), we will be stronger. We’ll connect. We’ll grow. We’ll bond.

My Quirkiness makes you Stronger!

Ultimately, I’ll help you stand, and you’ll help me. Even better…add another person or two to the group. Our strength doesn’t add or multiple…it’s exponential!

Sunday, Pastor Matt challenged us to join a Grow Group. I can guarantee your group will be full of quirkiness – much of it yours and mine. If you let it, that quirkiness will make you a better, stronger and more healthy person.

Grow. Together. Better.

Wanna take a Walk? – Pastor Andy Bondurant

Walking is in…at least the thought of walking is popular. One of the top Christmas gifts in 2015 were the Fitbit type watches. In case you are unaware, this wristband/watches keep track of the number of steps you take every day. The idea is to help you be more fit by keeping track of your steps, so you can set goals to take more steps every day or week. Stores couldn’t keep certain styles of these watches in stock this Christmas.

I purchased a Fitbit type watch this past summer, and it works. I took more walks in 2015 than I have in ages – all because of a piece of plastic on my wrist. In fact, I know I took more than 1.2 million steps in just half of 2015. That’s a lot of walking.

Taking a physical walk is trending, but it’s nothing new.

Genesis 3:8-10

8When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the lord God among the trees.9Then the lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

Walk with God

This is the only time we see God walking in the Garden of Eden, but it doesn’t seem to be the first. We get the feeling that God regularly would walk in the garden, and He would physically walk with Adam and Eve. They would walk together.

Walking has long been a part of growing deep.

walk together

Growing Deep

This week, we have been fasting, praying and asking God to grow our roots deep into Him. Practically, this means being thankful, spending time and putting importance on being with God, having a Word spoken to us (Word of the Year), and looking at Christ.

Let me add one more to this list. Our roots grow deep in God when we walk with Him.

So what does that mean?

What Walking with God looks Like

  1. God wants to walk with you. God showed up in the garden to be with Adam and Eve. He wanted to walk with them. He wanted to be with them. God wants to be with you. He wants to walk down the road you are headed with you. He wants to do life with you.
  2. God wants you to invite Him into your walk. Notice how God showed up in the garden looking for Adam and Eve. Only when He couldn’t “find” them, did He call. God was looking for an invitation from Adam and Eve into their walk. God is looking for an invitation from you into your walk. As much as He wants to walk with you, He won’t do it unless you ask.
  3. God is willing to walk with you in the midst of your mess. God had no problem with Adam and Eve’s nakedness. It was Adam and Eve who had a problem with being naked. God isn’t shocked by your mess. He wants to enter into it with you, so He can help you clean the mess up.

Just Keep Walking

One of the realizations I’ve made with my Fitbit is I’ll never be done walking. If I reach my goal today…there’s always tomorrow. To truly be fit, I have to commit to walking or exercise for life.

Growing deep in God doesn’t happen in a day. It’s a long, continuous process. You have to keep walking with God. Just keep walking…
