Why on Earth is an expression that is used when one is extremely surprised or confused about something.  There are certain spiritual principles that govern our earthly lives that simply make no sense.

Why on Earth would you take the lowly place when you could sit at the head of the table? Why on Earth would you give something away when it cost you dearly?
